Dear Linda & Chet:

June 12, 2008

The earthquake caused tremendous damage in the area near the Wolong Nature Reserve in China.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your recent gift. This will help with the San Diego Zoo's efforts to provide support for the Wolong Giant Panda Breeding Center in China, which was severely damaged during the disastrous earthquake that occurred one month ago today.

We received the sad news earlier this week that one of Wolong's giant pandas—a 9-year-old female named Mao Mao—was killed by the earthquake and another panda—Xiao Xiao, a 6-year-old female—is still missing. (I knew Mao Mao well and you can read more about her on my blog.) Even so, now that we are learning in more detail about the tremendous level of destruction at Wolong, it is truly a miracle that the majority of the center's 60-plus pandas survived the 7.9 magnitude earthquake.

On May 23, our beloved San Diego Zoo-born panda, Hua Mei, and five other females were relocated to Wolong's satellite panda center in Bifengxia, a few hours south of Chengdu. Hua Mei's half-brother, Mei Sheng, who was also born in San Diego, was safely residing in Bifengxia when the earthquake struck.

Thus far, thanks to your generosity, we have raised more than $50,000, which will enable us to help Wolong. However, we are still in desperate need of additional funds now that we know the scope of the devastation. If you could forward this information to friends who might be interested in helping us aid Wolong, we would sincerely appreciate it.

Again, thank you for your contribution. We will keep you updated on Wolong giant panda news in the coming months.

Sincerely,
Ron Swaisgood, Ph.D.
Co-Head, San Diego Zoo’s Giant Panda Conservation Unit
