February 25, 2008, Sandra Miller, an American, visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and adopted a giant panda named Bao Shi.
Ms. Miller visited the cub enclosures and the sub-adult enclosures. During the trip, a Base guide talked of many things concerning giant pandas. Finally, she came to the nursery facility where she had an intimate experience with the giant pandas – taking a picture together with the lovely animals. She loved the giant pandas very much, and the love was returned. One giant panda kept touching her face, making her so excited that her speech and behavior were filled with happiness.
At the end of the visit, Mr. Xia Zhenglin, the vice director of the Base, issued the certificate of adoption to Ms. Miller and took a picture with her. She named the adopted giant panda Bao Shi (precious stone).
Ms. Miller said this was the second time she had been to the Base. Last year when she was here on her first visit, she took a lot of pictures which she made into albums after she returned to the United States. Now she offered the albums as gifts to the Base, and the leaders of the Base expressed thanks for her care and love for giant pandas and for her concern with giant panda conservation.
Finally, Ms. Miller wished that Bao Shi would grow happily and healthily, and promised to see Bao Shi frequently.
