Wolong Pandas 14 pandas from Wolong were moved shortly after the earthquake, 8 to the Beijing Zoo as previously planned for the Olympics and 6 to the Bifengxia Panda base, which is under the Wolong authority. Pandas International immediately shipped two new incubators to Bifengxia as cubs should hopefully be arriving soon, although we have no idea what impact the earthquake will have had on the pregnant females.
Much of the Wolong Panda Reserve has been destroyed. One panda at the breeding center and five staff members of the larger Wolong Nature reserve were killed. Water at the reserve is polluted and much of the bamboo is buried under rock and mud, making the reserve unable to support the pandas or the staff.
A few days ago, a second group of pandas were also moved to Bifengxia. The rest remain at Wolong with staff.
Officials are trying to move all the Wolong pandas to the safer Bifengxia reserve outside of Yaan city. Yaan is west of Chengdu, but unfortunately, unlike Wolong it can get very hot there. New enclosures are being constructed to house the pandas from Wolong.
Dr. Li Desheng, Vice Director of (CCRCGP) China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda, will go to the Bifengxia base. We are awaiting a needs assessment from Dr. Li as to what supplies are needed for the influx of pandas to this center. Dr. Tang will remain at Wolong until all pandas are moved.
